How do we think about climate change when making decisions on our roads and buildings? This is a complex challenge that needs to balance many considerations. We need to look at the big picture and consider what matters to Yukoners, whether we’re:

  • retrofitting buildings;
  • installing renewable energy systems; or
  • improving our highways’ resilience against the impacts of climate change.

The Yukon Green Infrastructure Program is built on a 5 pillar framework. This framework guides decision making when we select which projects move forward. Not every project is equal. Each offers varying benefits in cost, energy savings, emissions reductions and other co-benefits. So, how does the government evaluate competing factors to choose which ones are worth doing?

The Yukon Green Infrastructure Program’s 5 pillar framework is:

Climate change impacts

Projects should:

  • reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and
  • improve the Yukon’s resilience to climate change.

Reliable operations

Projects should result in reliable and sustainable operations of equipment, process or program.

Value for taxpayer dollar

Projects should have a sound business case.

Local economic benefits

Projects should support the growth of a local green economy.

Leadership and excellence

Projects should show leadership on climate change goals.

We root decisions about the program’s projects in evidence from data and research. This ensures our projects have the greatest possible impact towards our climate change goals.
