What's changing?
The Yukon is updating its driver’s licence and general identification cards to meet North American standards. With these updates, the Yukon will have the most secure identification cards in Canada.
Updated design
Yukon driver’s licences and general identification cards:
- are similar to other Canadian provinces and territories;
- are more durable and secure;
- have black and white photos and new design features from the Yukon; and
- include more than 10 unique security features.
New delivery method
Previously, Yukon driver’s licences and general identification cards were printed at the Motor Vehicles office in Whitehorse. With the new security features we’re no longer able to do this.
We’ll now be using a secure printing vendor in Ontario to print these identification cards.
Cards will be printed within 3 business days and be mailed to you by Canada Post. The Canada Post delivery standard is 4-10 days. Yukoners should allow up to 4 weeks for delivery.
This new process gives Yukoners a more secure card that is hard to illegally reproduce.
Fee change:
The new fee for your drivers’ licence is:
- $20 per year; or
- $100 for a 5-year card.
No fee change:
There is no fee change for general identification cards or replacement cards.
Renewing your Yukon ID
Your driver’s licence or general identification card is still valid until it expires. You may renew your licence up to 6 months before it expires.
Yes, the temporary 90-day driver’s licence gives you the same driving authority as the standard driver's licence card. The temporary driver’s licence is not considered valid photo ID.
If you need to rent a vehicle, you can use your temporary driver’s licence along with your passport. This combination of ID should allow you to rent a vehicle. Check with the car rental agency to confirm their requriements.
Always plan ahead to avoid delays and renew your driver’s licence and general identification cards early.

A Yukon driver’s licence or general identification card is not required for travel. There are various other forms of ID that you can use.

For Domestic Travel:
Bring one identification document issued by a Canadian federal, provincial or territorial government. It must include your:
- photo;
- full name; and
- date of birth.
If you don’t have any ID that includes your photo, full name and date of birth, you can use 2 other IDs instead. Both IDs must be issued by a Canadian federal, provincial or territorial government and must show your name. At least 1 of these documents must show your full name and date of birth.
Driver’s licences and general identification cards are printed in a secure facility in Ontario and mailed to your residential address. This process allows the Government of Yukon to provide Yukoners with a secure card that meets the highest North American standards.
The Yukon’s existing driver’s licences do not meet the current North American standards. They’re considered less secure than other driver’s licences and general identification cards in Canada.

Yes, driver’s licences and general identification cards will have brand new designs and security features to make them the most secure in Canada. By transitioning to a laser-engraved polycarbonate card, Yukon’s driver’s licences and general identification cards will look similar to those of other Canadian jurisdictions.
The fee increase is due to the higher cost of making the cards and the new security features that prevent fraud and stop them from being replicated.
The new cards are required to be made in a highly-secure, certified facility. This is the same standard as every other jurisdiction in Canada.
Yes. Your current driver’s licence and/or general identification card is still valid until it expires.
You can renew your licence up to 6 monthsbefore its expiry. You can also replace your licence:
- if your licence has been lost or stolen (for a replacement fee); or
- whenever you have moved or changed residences (for free). Please note in this case that your expiry date remains the same.
