Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more common in our lives, including in schools. It’s important for students, teachers and families to know how to use these tools in a smart and safe way.
In Yukon schools, students learn about digital literacy, digital tools, and how to use technology safely and responsibly. This learning begins in Grade 6, but it’s never too early to start teaching about the use of current and future technology.
Will AI be used in my child’s school?
The use of AI in your child's school may vary between classrooms. Some teachers may use AI in different ways to help with learning. For example, if your child has a disability, AI could be used to support them. To learn more about AI use in your child's class, ask their teacher or principal.
For assignments, some teachers may allow AI tools for certain tasks. Students should always ask their teacher for permission before using AI. Like calculators in math, AI can be another helpful tool in some classrooms.
Information for parents and students
The BC Government has produced materials to support teachers, parents and caregivers, and students. These materials are designed to help everyone understand the role AI can play in education.
