Influenza or the flu is a common infectious respiratory disease is spread from person to person primarily through respiratory tract droplets created by coughing or sneezing, but can also be transmitted through contaminated surfaces.

Influenza can lead to serious complications in those with or without co-morbidities, including healthy infants, children and seniors. Influenza has a seasonal trend with disease typically arriving in Canada late fall/early winter and ending in the spring.

The best prevention against influenza is immunization, which begins annually throughout Canada in October and November. Hand washing, effective respiratory etiquette and staying home when sick also play key roles in infection control.
