You can apply for this special permit if you can prove:
- the front axle of your vehicle has a manufacturer’s rating that exceeds the requirement set out in the Highways Act Regulations, Section 13; and
- as long as your vehicle is also equipped with tires capable of carrying the weight which meet or exceed the manufacturer’s rating for the front axle.
The special permit does not increase the allowable gross vehicle weight for your vehicle.
You must call ahead with all information about weights and dimensions and ask for a travel number. Depending on load weight and dimensions, analysis might be required which will take at least 3 business days to prepare.
The front axle overload permit can be completed and issued by a carrier compliance officer at the Whitehorse or Watson Lake weigh station.

When you apply for a front axle overload permit, you need to provide the following information before the permit can be issued:
- copy of valid vehicle insurance;
- copy of valid vehicle registration;
- valid driver’s licence; and
- a completed special front axle overload application form.
You may need to provide the following. The carrier compliance officer will let you know if these are needed:
- lease agreement;
- copy of bill of lading;
- copy of valid vehicle ownership such as a bill of sale; and
- if you are carrying dangerous goods you need a current Dangerous Goods Training Certificate.
