Celebrating a great first season at the Pelly Crossing pool

As August came to an end, so did a great first season at the new Pelly Crossing seasonal community pool. This infrastructure project, which took place following investments from the Government of Yukon and the Government of Canada, consisted of designing and constructing a new pool to replace the existing covered below-ground facility, which was built in 1984 and was at the end of its serviceable life.

The new pool served as more than just a place to cool off on hot summer days; it provided refreshing recreational opportunities for community members of all ages. Along with the many physical and mental health benefits of swimming, the pool helped bring people together and encouraged socialization for adults, teens and kids.

This project reflects the Yukon government’s commitment to sustainability and greener practices by repurposing existing infrastructure built on the existing site, such as the solar hot water heating system.

The Government of Canada invested $5.25 million in this project through the Community, Culture, and Recreation Infrastructure Stream (CCRIS) and Rural and Northern Communities Infrastructure Stream (RNCIS) of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The Government of Yukon contributed more than $3.45 million to the new pool.

Our government is proud to invest in community infrastructure that creates opportunities for Yukoners and visitors to gather, learn and play. The opening of the Pelly Crossing pool is an exciting milestone for the community and I look forward to seeing the positive impacts for years to come. We are thankful for the consistent support from the Government of Canada in promoting recreation, and I extend my best wishes to the Selkirk First Nation as they oversee the operation of this impressive facility.

Minister of Community Services Richard Mostyn

Across the Yukon, shared public spaces are the beating heart of our communities. By investing in infrastructure like the new pool in Pelly Crossing, we are helping build strong, resilient communities. Operated by the Selkirk First Nation, I am confident that the new pool will serve as an important hub for social gatherings, physical activity and more. It was great seeing the new facility this summer, and I look forward to its use for years to come. Máhsin cho to everyone who helped bring this project to life!
