The Government of Yukon is awarding the contract for Phase 1a, conceptual and schematic design, of the new Dawson recreation centre to Wildstone Construction & Engineering Ltd. This initiative is part of the Government of Yukon’s ongoing commitment to fostering environments and building sustainable infrastructure to promote social connection and wellbeing for Yukoners.
The project uses the progressive design-build procurement method, which integrates the design and construction phases into a single procurement. This method supports collaboration between the contractor and proponents, allowing the contractor’s expertise to be included in the project design. The Government of Yukon will work alongside the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Government and City of Dawson, as part of the working group for this facility, to prioritize the needs of the community.
The new Dawson recreation centre will replace the Art and Margaret Fry Recreation Centre; providing space for physical activity and community building.
Awarding this contract brings Dawsonites one significant step closer to having this project completed and a new community hub in place for Klondike residents. Recreation is a vital part of community health. It fosters physical activity, connectiveness and mental wellbeing. When we invest in recreational infrastructure we are investing in a happier and healthier community.
We are excited that this critical piece of infrastructure development is underway in Dawson. A project of this scale has the potential to bring tremendous economic benefits to Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in Citizens and contractors, and we are confident in the ability of our community to play a key role in the completion of a new recreation facility. Recreation infrastructure and programming are the cornerstones of a healthy community, and we look forward to offering input and feedback to ensure the design is culturally appropriate and serves the diverse needs of Dawson residents.
The award of this contract to Wildstone Construction & Engineering Ltd. is a critical next step towards a new recreation centre for our town. Working with this new contractor, the City of Dawson will continue to advance this essential piece of infrastructure alongside our Yukon and Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Government partners, with the assistance of our citizen-led Dawson City Recreation Board.
