Final countdown to the 2023 United Way Breakfast fundraiser

The Government of Yukon will host the annual United Way Breakfast fundraiser tomorrow, Friday, October 6, at the Sternwheeler Hotel & Conference Centre in Whitehorse from 7 am to 10:30 am. This family- friendly event is a Yukon tradition with a history spanning over 30 years. The theme is Giving and Gratitude, a fitting message on the importance of giving back to the community and being grateful.

Yukoners can enjoy breakfast prepared by Tony’s Pasta and Seafood House by dining in or by picking up breakfast to-go through the drive-thru. Both the dine-in and drive-thru experiences will feature the Yukon’s very own celebrity servers. Large group orders are accepted for pick up.

The online silent auction is live now and closes at 10:30 am on Friday, October 6. Yukoners can bid for items online at https://www.32auctions.com/UWY2023.

Individual and group performers of various musical styles are scheduled to appear live. Local performers include Nic Mah, Ed McLean, Sarah Hamilton, Roxx Hunter and traditional dancing and singing by Kwanlin Dághàalàan k’e. The Cancan Dancers will also be making an appearance and will be onsite for photos.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for kids 12 and under. As with all proceeds raised from the fundraiser, donations will go to United Way Yukon’s Community Investment Fund which supports local charities and community organizations to support people in need across the territory. The "donate a breakfast" ticket funds go directly to local groups through this fund.

I look forward to joining Yukoners tomorrow at the United Way Breakfast fundraiser, kicking off the long weekend with community spirit. This event thrives on the generosity of sponsors, donors and volunteers, and I’m grateful for their continuous support. The Yukon spirit of giving back shines in events like these, making a significant impact on local organizations and communities. Thank you to all those who are coming out to enjoy good food for a great cause!

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee

I often ask myself what difference does United Way Yukon make to the Yukon? Why have I sat on the board for almost half of its existence and as president for almost a third of its existence?

My answer is always that we make a concrete difference to small charities that do not have the capacity to raise their own funds. Or, if they do some fundraising of their own, we extend that capacity. Charities in the Yukon are small. They do not have a fundraising division. They have a staff member or two who pause their regular job for a while to do the fundraising they need so they can cover what regular funding streams don’t.

That is why the Yukon government has stood behind United Way Yukon for almost 29 years. That is why its employees work so hard to bring this breakfast to life every year. That is why I love my role as president of United Way Yukon – because we make a difference in the lives of many Yukoners.

United Way Yukon President Dave Whiteside
