The Government of Yukon congratulates the Association of Yukon Communities on a successful AGM

Premier Ranj Pillai issued the following statement:

“On behalf of the Yukon government, I want to express congratulations to the Association of Yukon Communities for hosting a successful 49th Annual General Meeting in Dawson City, from May 9 to 12, 2024. I greatly appreciate the Association of Yukon Communities’ efforts to bring together the territory’s elected officials and staff for a weekend of fostering deep community connection.

“Alongside Ministers Jeanie McLean, Tracy-Anne McPhee and John Streicker and senior staff from several Yukon government departments, it was an honour to address meeting attendees, speak to municipal leaders from across the territory and recognize six municipalities celebrating milestone anniversaries in 2024.

“Congratulations are in order to Watson Lake, which celebrated its 40th anniversary of incorporation on April 1. Four more municipalities will be celebrating their 40th anniversary this year: Mayo on June 1, Teslin on August 1, Haines Junction on October 1, and Carmacks on November 1. The Town of Faro will be celebrating 55 years of incorporation on June 13.  

“I want to thank this past weekend’s speakers – particularly those who chose to raise their voices in the spirit of sport, community and reconciliation. All of us share the responsibility of bettering the Yukon for all who live here. A special thank you is in order to Community Services staff who were in attendance but quickly pivoted to help manage the territory-wide telecommunications blackout and share information with municipal leaders.

“The Yukon government will now begin to work with the Association of Yukon Communities to better understand the resolutions that were passed at the AGM and determine next steps for their study and potential implementation.

“I would like to congratulate newly elected Association of Yukon Communities President Lauren Hanchar, Councillor for the Town of Watson Lake. I know your mother; MLA Patti McLeod is proud of all you’ve accomplished and I can speak on behalf of all members of the Yukon Legislative Assembly when I say that we all look forward to working with you in your new role advocating for all of the Yukon’s municipalities and communities.

“Congratulations are also in order to the rest of the newly-elected Association of Yukon Communities Executive, including First Vice President Doris Hansen, Councillor for the Village of Carmacks, Second Vice President Taylor Fetterly, Councillor for the Town of Faro and Past President Ted Laking, Councillor for the City of Whitehorse.

“I would like to close by acknowledging the hard work of Association of Yukon Communities staff, including outgoing Executive Director Shelley Hassard and Manager of Operations David Rosza for all their hard work to bring the conference to fruition.”
