Government of Yukon supporting Whitehorse General Hospital during period of high demand

The Whitehorse General Hospital is experiencing higher than normal volume and demand. 

The Government of Yukon, Yukon Hospital Corporation and Yukon Medical Association are working collaboratively to help ensure Yukoners continue to have access to care when they need it. 

To mitigate pressures at the hospital, the Department of Health and Social Services is:

  • leveraging Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to assist Whitehorse General Hospital staff to ensure patients receive comprehensive, timely care;
  • expanding the hours of services of the Whitehorse Walk-in Clinic for unattached patients as needed and as possible;
  • exploring options to use additional health staff such as nursing and allied health resources to support inpatient care at Whitehorse General Hospital;
  • supporting Yukon Hospital Corporation discharge planning for patients that require an alternate level of care or facilities that better meet their needs and frees up inpatient beds; and
  • enabling additional care spaces on an as-needed basis.

In emergencies, Yukoners are urged to visit the nearest emergency department or dial 911. For non-emergency situations or less urgent needs, they can call their health care provider. For those without a family provider, call the Whitehorse Walk-In Medical Clinic at 867-471-0035. Anyone who is unsure, can dial 811 for health advice from a Registered Nurse.

Together, we are taking action to help ensure Yukoners continue to have access to hospital care when they need it and to alleviate some of the current pressures in the hospital system.
