Joint statement on investment from Government of Canada to support the Yukon’s climate action and greenhouse gas reduction

Today, the Government of Yukon, together with the Government of Canada, announced an investment of up to $8.4 million from Canada’s Low Carbon Economy Challenge Fund to support climate action and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Yukon. The Government of Canada has also allocated up to $36.4 million for the Yukon under the Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund.

Minister of Highways and Public Works Nils Clarke has issued the following statement:

“Up to $8.4 million under the Low Carbon Economy Challenge Fund will help build renewable heating systems in Yukon government buildings. These heating systems aim to reduce the use of propane and light fuel oil, which will reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

“Investing in renewable heating systems is an integral part of creating a sustainable future. As a government, we aim to lead through action and find greener ways to heat Government of Yukon buildings. This funding will allow us to make strategic upgrades to our buildings and progress towards our goals within Our Clean Future.

“I would like to thank the Government of Canada for its support as we work to reduce our carbon footprint. Projects like these are a great example of what can be accomplished through collaboration. Together, one project at a time, we are taking steps towards a greener future.”

Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources John Streicker has issued the following statement:

“Upgrading the Yukon's current building stock to modern energy-efficient standards not only helps ensure sustainable, cost-effective, and comfortable homes and buildings for Yukoners but also boosts the local economy by creating job opportunities in the building trades and construction industry. Moreover, it plays a crucial role in meeting our collective objectives in response to the climate emergency.

“We are pleased to be working with the federal government on determining how we will use the up to $36.4 million in new federal funding allocated to the Yukon under the Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund. This valuable funding will support our climate actions under Our Clean Future and help both governments achieve mutual targets for significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2050. We thank the Government of Canada for its continued role in supporting our long-term efforts to move the Yukon towards a cleaner, sustainable and green future.”
