New duplex opens in Dawson

The Government of Yukon is continuing work to help Yukoners find a place to call home. As part of its commitment to improving access to affordable housing across the territory, the Government of Yukon announces that two newly constructed units in Dawson are now available for Yukon Housing Corporation tenants.

The duplex located at 925-7th Avenue in downtown Dawson replaces the original single-family home structure destroyed by a fire. The new duplex comprises a 1,108 square-foot two-bedroom unit on the main level and a 785 square-foot one-bedroom unit on the upper level. Both units exceed energy efficiency ratings by 35 per cent of National Energy Building Code requirements.

Yukon Housing Corporation will own and operate these units as part of the Rent-Geared-to-Income program, which assists Yukoners in need of affordable and suitable and housing.

The duplex was completed for a total cost of $1.5 million. Funding for this project was provided through Yukon Housing Corporation’s five-year capital plan.

This new duplex will help alleviate the pressures on affordable housing options available in Dawson. Units will be assigned to those on the corporation’s waitlist, enabling tenants to create a sense of home in their community. This approach is in line with the corporation’s new five-year strategic plan called Creating Home, which aims to support the creation of healthy homes and communities to better the lives of Yukoners.

Building houses and creating homes are central to growing vibrant communities where Yukoners can thrive. This new energy-efficient duplex will enable Yukoners to remain in Dawson and continue contributing to their community. These housing investments reflect our ongoing commitment to support Yukoners’ access to affordable housing and building infrastructure for a sustainable future.
