Recipients announced for annual First Nation cultural centres and museums special projects funding

The annual Special Projects Capital Assistance Program (SPCAP) has granted funding to 12 First Nation cultural centres and museums across the Yukon for a total of $348,000 distributed among 15 projects.

The provided funding will aid in a range of initiatives that will improve the ability of the recipients to share their stories, including to protect, preserve and interpret their collections. Funded projects for 2023/24 include the planning, installation and improvement of current and future exhibits, collections management, building repair and more.

SPCAP is an annual application-based fund available to eligible cultural centres and museums, which supports the Yukon government's commitment to partnering with Yukon First Nations in the protection, preservation, and interpretation of the territory's natural and human history.

A full list of recipients and amounts is available below and at Yukon.ca/special-capital-projects-assistance-program-recipients.

Our government is committed to supporting our shared Yukon story. Yukon First Nation cultural centres and museums are vital to this goal as they educate, inspire, and encourage discovery and appreciation among generations and communities. Our government is proud to support the recipients of the 2023/24 annual funding as they continue to safeguard and provide access to our collective heritage.

Minister of Tourism and Culture John Streicker

The Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre is extremely happy to have been accepted for both of our SPCAP projects this year. Our Indigenous Matriarchs exhibition opening in June will host artworks from artists throughout the Yukon and celebrate the strong matriarchs that have led Yukon Indigenous groups for countless generations. Our Digital Collections XR project will allow objects in our collection to be scanned using photogrammetry and 3D modelling. This will allow our art pieces to be used in a variety of new mediums such as Virtual and Augmented Reality, which grants a new and exciting experience for guests and visitors. Support from YG will allow us to fairly compensate all artists and gives us the freedom to build our ideas to new heights.
