Statement from Deputy Premier McLean on return from diplomatic mission to London with Yukon First Nations delegation

Deputy Premier Jeanie McLean has issued the following statement:  

"Returning from our diplomatic mission to London, alongside a distinguished delegation of Yukon First Nations leaders, fills me with an overwhelming sense of pride and gratitude. I extend my deepest appreciation to all the esteemed Yukon First Nations leaders who joined us on this remarkable journey of cultural exchange and diplomatic engagement.

“Together, we had the unique opportunity to highlight the exceptional depth of the cultural heritage of Yukon First Nations, while simultaneously reaffirming our territory's commitment to reconciliation.

“This mission reflected the collaborative spirit and unity that define the Yukon's approach to forging meaningful relationships both domestically and internationally. As we stood shoulder to shoulder on the global stage, we not only celebrated the vibrant traditions and heritage of Yukon First Nations but also created space for conversations that resonate far beyond the borders of our territory.

“At the heart of our mission was the opening of the Honouring Our Future: Yukon First Nations Graduation Regalia exhibition at Canada House in London. Celebrating nearly 50 years of Yukon First Nations graduation ceremonies, the exhibition showcases the academic achievements of Yukon First Nations students while highlighting the pride and artistry of their background. It features wearable art pieces that preserve and revive Yukon First Nations values and traditions. This exhibit was also showcased at the following cultural centres in the Yukon over a three-year period: Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre, Danoja Zho Cultural Centre, Da Kų Cultural Centre, Haa Shagóon Hídi and the Teslin Tlingit Heritage Centre.

“Our government is proud to have provided $25,000 in funding to the exhibit, which serves as an inspiration to future graduates and represents a significant partnership between the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre, the Teslin Tlingit Heritage Centre and the Yukon Arts Centre.

“As we reflect on the impact of our diplomatic mission to London, our government, together with our partners, remains committed to building connections, promoting understanding and upholding the values of reconciliation and mutual respect that are fundamental to our collective path ahead."
