Statement from Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee on World Cancer Day

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:

"This Sunday marks World Cancer Day, a day to honour and remember everyone affected by cancer and join together to prevent, detect, treat and beat cancer.

“Cancer is a leading cause of death in Canada, and it indiscriminately and inevitably touches all of us at some point in our lives, whether it be through our own cancer diagnosis or the diagnosis of a family member or friend.

“According to the territory’s Health Status Reports, the four most common forms of cancers in the Yukon are breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer and prostate cancer. The most prominent cancer, and leading cause of cancer death, is lung cancer, and it is estimated that just over two in five Canadians will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime.

“The Government of Yukon is investing in patients by helping Yukoners access high-quality cancer care. Further details of this funding will be announced in Budget 2024–25 and are subject to legislative approval.

“If you or your loved ones are faced with cancer, you are not alone. Yukoners can access a number of cancer supports through the Department of Health and Social Services and through the Yukon Hospital Corporation’s Cancer Care Coordinator.
