Statement from Minister McLean and Minister McPhee on Pride celebrations in the Yukon

Minister responsible for the Women and Gender Equity Directorate Jeanie McLean and Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee have issued the following statement:

“As Pride season events take place across the territory, our government proudly joins in the celebrations uplifting the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and recognizes their significant contributions to the Yukon. Our government reaffirms its commitment to ensuring 2SLGBTQIA+ Yukoners feel seen, safe and supported.

“It is important to remember that Pride is a time of advocacy and allyship. To the Yukon 2SLGBTQIA+ community, know that our government is committed to advocating for your rights, promoting inclusive policies and programs, and to working alongside you for a more inclusive territory. This includes fulfilling our commitments outlined in the 2021 LGBTQ2S+ Inclusion Action Plan.

“Pride is a celebration of love, community, resilience and diversity – core values of our territory.

"We are encouraged to see these celebrations grow across the territory. We extend our congratulations to the community of Mayo on hosting their first ever Pride parade last month. Thank you to the dedicated student who led the parade in commemoration of a beloved community member.

“We would like to acknowledge the ongoing commitment and work of Queer Yukon for hosting several Pride events this year with the theme of “Chosen Family Reunion.” These events started last month in Dawson City, with others to follow later this summer in Whitehorse and Watson Lake. Thank you to the many staff and volunteers contributing to these events, making Yukon’s Pride season the fantastic celebration that it is.

“Pride season is an opportunity for everyone to celebrate the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in the Yukon. Let’s mark this occasion by amplifying 2SLBGTQIA+ voices and reaffirming everyone’s right to safety and self-determination.”

“Happy Pride season, Yukon!"
