Statement from Minister McPhee on International Human Rights Day

Minister of Justice Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement: 

“This Sunday, December 10, is International Human Rights Day, marking the 75th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

“The declaration is a groundbreaking global pledge that proclaims the absolute rights to which everyone is entitled as a human being – regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, gender, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

“The theme for the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is ‘Freedom, Equality and Justice for All.’

“This theme reiterates that the values enshrined within the Universal Declaration guide global actions that do not leave anyone behind amidst the challenges the world is facing.

“International Human Rights Day encourages us to ask how we can continue to:

• end discrimination;
• address inequality;
• encourage diversity and inclusion;
• support participation and solidarity; and
• promote sustainable development.

“Today is an opportunity for governments, individuals, grass-roots organizations, private enterprises and all Yukoners to come together and imagine their role in building a world that improves the present and ensures a future of which we can all be proud. A future that is free of hate and all forms of discrimination. A future where our vulnerable peoples’ voices are heard and they can access services, heal, feel protected and flourish.”
