Statement from Minister McPhee on National Addictions Awareness Week

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:

“This week is National Addictions Awareness Week, a time dedicated to deepening our understanding of substance use and addiction in the Yukon and across Canada.

“This year, under the theme of 'Inspiration, Innovation and Inclusion,' we acknowledge that substance use is a complex challenge with far-reaching implications.

“Our government remains committed to addressing these challenges head-on. With the Substance Use Health Emergency Strategy as our roadmap, our collaborative approach to substance use health combines evidence, best practices and traditional knowledge, helping ensure our actions and initiatives are both compassionate and effective.

“During National Addictions Awareness Week and beyond, we are committed to ongoing engagement with communities, sharing resources and fostering conversations and actions about substance use health.

“Numerous initiatives are being organized across our communities during this week, with many benefiting from the support and collaboration of Mental Wellness and Substance Use Services.

“A notable example is the series of events being hosted by the Kwanlin Dün First Nation (KDFN) from November 19 to 25. These activities are designed to bring together citizens and families for a week of connection, learning and shared experiences.

“In Carmacks, the Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation has planned a series of events from November 20 to 24 at the Heritage Hall and the Carmacks Rec Complex. A notable event is the Sobriety Walk on November 24, an opportunity for community members to demonstrate their support for sobriety and wellness.

“In Old Crow, Vuntut Gwitchin Government has coordinated a Spiritual Healing Week to help come together as a community and work collectively through struggles and setbacks, build on spiritual strengths and beliefs, and support our path forward together.

“To those who are struggling, know that you are not alone. There are resources available, and in collaboration with our partners, we are committed to providing the support you need.

“To our health care providers, community leaders and all those working on the front lines of this issue, your efforts are invaluable and we thank you for your dedication.

“We encourage all Yukoners to continue to learn, share and support each other in addressing this issue. Compassion is essential in supporting individuals facing addiction, as well as those serving as caregivers to those on the path to recovery.

“As we observe National Addictions Awareness Week, let’s embrace the principles of inspiration, innovation and inclusion and work together towards a future where every Yukoner has the opportunity to live a healthy life and achieve their dreams.”
