Statement from Minister McPhee on National Community Safety and Crime Prevention Month

Minister of Justice Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:

“November is National Community Safety and Crime Prevention Month, where Canadians are invited to reflect on crime prevention best practices and community safety issues that affect us on a day-to-day basis.

“This topic has been a growing focus for many of us across the Yukon, both in Whitehorse and in the communities.

“As Yukoners, we can all play a role in community safety. This may mean volunteering at after-school and weekend programs for youth, promoting the inclusion and wellbeing of people within marginalized communities or developing projects aimed at ending violence against women and children. It may also mean looking out for your neighbours or helping Elders prepare for the winter months.

“Many governments and organizations, lead various projects, contributing to the safety and health of the territory. We are proud to support their efforts through the Crime Prevention and Victim Services Trust, which provides funding twice a year to support developing local solutions aimed at addressing existing and emerging community issues.

“We are also pleased to provide funding to First Nations governments through our Community Safety Planning program. Through this program, First Nations governments can access funding up to $200,000 for community safety planning and implementation.

“We would like to thank all of the organizations and volunteers, as well as Yukon First Nations governments, municipal governments and the RCMP, that have played and continue to play, an important role in building and maintaining safe Yukon communities.”
