Minister responsible for French Language Services Directorate John Streicker has issued the following statement for Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day
“On the eve of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, the Yukon joins Canadians from coast to coast to coast celebrating Francophone culture. This day is a special occasion to come together with friends and family and be proud of the rich traditions of the Francophonie here in the Yukon and across the country.
“The Yukon has a vibrant and growing Francophone community, with 14 per cent of the territory’s population speaking both French and English, and three French-language schools educating future bilingual leaders. After Quebec and New Brunswick, the Yukon is the third-most bilingual province or territory in Canada.
“Our government is committed to supporting the vitality of our Francophone community. Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day is one of the many opportunities for Yukoners to gather and enjoy Francophone music and culture year-round.
“I invite all Yukoners to take part in the festivities organized by the Association franco-yukonnaise (l’AFY) at the S.S. Klondike National Historic Site and enjoy the music performed by talented artists from all over the country.
“Bonne Saint-Jean-Baptiste!’’
