Statement from the Minister responsible for the Women and Gender Equity Directorate Jeanie McLean on International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict

Minister responsible for the Women and Gender Equity Directorate Jeanie McLean has issued the following statement:

"Today we recognize the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, a day of global significance that raises awareness about the urgent need to end conflict-related sexualized violence. This day is a reminder to honour the victims and survivors of sexualized violence worldwide and pay tribute to those who have dedicated their lives in the pursuit of eradicating these atrocious crimes.

“Sexualized violence in conflict is a disturbing reality that inflicts pain and suffering on individuals, families and communities. It is a stark manifestation of the broader issue of sexualized violence against women, girls and the gender diverse. It also reflects deeply rooted and persistent inequalities and power imbalances that are amplified in times of conflict.

“In marking this day, I reflect on the need to confront and challenge the structures and attitudes that perpetuate violence against women, girls and Two-Spirit+ people in all its forms. I am also reminded that our work here in the Yukon to combat gender-based violence is connected to the issue of ending sexualized violence in conflict.

“Recognizing this, I would like to reaffirm our government’s commitment to end sexualized violence. I also encourage all Yukoners to learn about the issue, challenge the status quo, and advocate for a world free from sexualized violence. Only by working together can we build a future where the rights, dignity, and safety of all individuals are respected and protected."
