Statement from Minister responsible for Yukon Liquor Corporation Silver on Social Responsibility Initiatives

Minister responsible for Yukon Liquor Corporation Sandy Silver has issued the following statement:

“We are fortunate to live in a territory that offers an incredible variety of events, initiatives and gatherings that enrich our lives and foster vibrant communities.

“Regardless of whether we are choosing to use substances at a community event or on our own, it is important for each of us to prioritize safety, act responsibly and minimize risks for ourselves and others.

“To reinforce this, our government is proud to provide various social responsibility initiatives through the Yukon Liquor Corporation and to collaborate with partners to strengthen these efforts.

“In 2022, to combat the substance use health emergency in the Yukon, the Yukon Liquor Corporation worked with the Department of Health and Social Services to support the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Society Yukon in organizing a healing camp at Jackson Lake.

“Together with Blood Ties, we partnered to provide naloxone kits and fentanyl test kits as part of a pilot project in response to the Yukon’s Substance Use Health Emergency.

“The corporation is currently working with Health and Social Services to distribute these kits through all Yukon Liquor Corporation stores in the communities.

“The corporation also plays a supportive role in the Department of Highways and Public Works Plan Ahead campaign, which focuses on educating Yukoners on the dangers of driving a vehicle while impaired.

“The corporation has recently transitioned to the Be A Responsible Server for Liquor training, known as BARS-L, online.

“The course content was updated to incorporate the latest information on low-risk drinking guidelines from the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addictions.

“The free server training is also available for cannabis. The Be A Responsible Server for Cannabis training, known as BARS-C, is mandatory for all cannabis servers and covers the health risks and the rules for selling cannabis products.

“Every year, the corporation contributes funding to high school graduation events for the "Safe Grad" initiative. The purpose is to support graduation planners in keeping graduates safe from alcohol and drug use during celebrations by organizing substance-free graduation events.

“These initiatives underscore a commitment to fostering a safer and healthier environment for Yukoners while ensuring responsible alcohol and cannabis consumption practices.

“It is in the spirit of these ongoing efforts that I am pleased to announce the successful implementation of the Rendezvous shuttle pilot, which took place in February this year.

“The shuttle service provided a free, safe and convenient transportation option for Rendezvous festival-goers, particularly during late-night hours when public transportation is limited.

“In doing so, the initiative also contributed to deterring impaired driving incidents, supporting a safer festival environment for all Yukoners, regardless of whether you attended the festivities.

“Together, we will continue to work towards a safer and healthier Yukon for all.”
