Statement from Minister of Tourism and Culture John Streicker on Historic Places Days

Minister of Tourism and Culture John Streicker has issued the following statement:

“July 10 to 17 is Canada Historic Places Days, an annual campaign organized by the National Trust for Canada to promote the importance of historic sites. During this week, hundreds of sites across the country will host special events and activities to celebrate Canada’s unique heritage and history.

“With 12 territorially designated Yukon Historic Sites, and more than 4,000 historic resources listed in the Yukon Historic Sites Inventory, the Yukon is home to a wealth of historic places that reflect our rich history and culture. The Yukon is the only region in Canada with historic sites that are co-owned and co-managed with self-governing First Nations.

“To mark this occasion, the Government of Yukon, in partnership with the Yukon Heritage Resources Board, is hosting a free event at the Robinson Roadhouse historic site from noon to three pm on Saturday, July 13. There will be a barbecue, live music, site tours and games. I encourage all Yukoners to join, especially those who may be new to the territory and haven’t yet had an opportunity to visit a Yukon historic site.

“I encourage all Yukoners and visitors to experience the Yukon’s historic places to better understand the stories and significance of our history, gain a deeper appreciation for cultural heritage and be inspired to preserve and protect these links to our past, for future generations.”
