Minister of Tourism and Culture John Streicker has issued the following statement:
“As we mark the 2023 International Archives Day, I ask Yukoners to join me in recognizing the invaluable service archives provide to share the past with the future.
“As a repository for collective memory, archives fulfill a vital role, offering today’s folks the ability to study and interpret our past, and to provide insights into the future. With public records, photographs, sound recordings, diaries and correspondence held in their care, archives endeavour to share as our rich and diverse Yukon story.
“With Yukon Archives having just celebrated its 50th anniversary, the continued advocacy of the Yukon Council of Archives, and growth in initiatives from Yukon First Nations, communities and other organizations, it is exciting to see the number of institutions in the Yukon who are currently involved in archival work.
“On behalf of the Government of Yukon, I wish to recognize the network of knowledgeable and dedicated people who make the archival world thrive. Their contributions to transparency, accountability, memory and community cannot be overstated. To the generous donors, passionate researchers, and incredible staff, congratulations and thank you, on behalf of the Government of Yukon, for all you do to preserve and protect heritage for the Yukon and beyond.”
