Statement from Minister of Tourism and Culture John Streicker on International Archives Week

Minister John Streicker has issued the following statement:

“From June 3 to 9, the Government of Yukon joins the global community in celebrating International Archives Week in recognition of the invaluable role archives play in preserving our collective history. This year’s theme, #CyberArchives, underscores the growing significance of the digital landscape in safeguarding our history and knowledge for future generations.

“In an era marked by unprecedented technological advancement and digital transformation, traditional archives are evolving to adapt and adopt in the digital realm. Challenges and opportunities exist surrounding Artificial Intelligence, machine learning and other advanced technologies and how they can aid in preservation efforts and inspire greater engagement with archival initiatives around the world.

“Archives are important resources and repositories for our past. They document and tell the stories of our shared history and in the process help us define a sense of identity and community. Whether consulted by historians, authors, filmmakers, genealogists, or someone researching for a lawsuit, archives serve many purposes and touch many lives.

“On behalf of the Government of Yukon, I wish to recognize and thank the skilled and dedicated people who form the archival community here in the Yukon. Their professionalism and passion for preserving and sharing our collective past is remarkable and impressive. We extend our thanks to archival donors for their important contributions.

“International Archives Week culminates with International Archives Day on June 9. This week, let’s all celebrate and reflect on the role archives play in preserving our past, informing our present and shaping our future.”
