The following statement was released by Premier Ranj Pillai:
“Since 2018, Canadians have recognized May as Canadian Jewish Heritage Month.
“While overcoming significant obstacles, the Canadian Jewish community has made many important contributions to the social, economic, political and cultural fabric of Canada.
“The Yukon’s Jewish population is small but vibrant, warm and welcoming. We are grateful to have the Jewish Cultural Society of Yukon represent Jewish Yukoners and bring their culture to the forefront.
“Jewish people have been part of the Yukon’s cultural fabric for the last 125 years, with the first Jewish Yukoners arriving during the Gold Rush. In 2014, the community restored Dawson’s Jewish cemetery and continue to come together every year to mark important occasions such as Passover and Rosh Hashanah.
“I encourage all Yukoners to remember, celebrate and educate themselves on the incredible role that Jewish Canadians play in our communities. May this month-long celebration deepen our appreciation for the richness of Jewish culture and inspire us to work towards greater understanding and respect for all cultures in the Yukon.”
