Statement from Premier Pillai on Discovery Day

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“On the third Monday of August each year, Discovery Day commemorates the discovery of gold at Bonanza Creek near Dawson City and offers us an opportunity to learn more about the Yukon’s unique history.

“Discovery Day is an important milestone for the Yukon. It marked the start of the Klondike Gold Rush, led to the formation of our territory and had significant impacts on the traditional territories and ways of life of Yukon First Nations.

“This milestone also represents a complex period of inequality for First Nations communities. It is important that we recognize this reality and that we use this opportunity to work with First Nations partners to better share a narrative that respects the diverse experiences of all Yukoners. Through initiatives such as the Yukon 125 Fund, our government has encouraged a diverse range of experiences regarding the history of this territory and how we communicate it both to ourselves and to visitors.

“I encourage all Yukoners to take a moment to recognize and reflect upon the history of the beautiful territory that we call home. I also urge you to take this time to learn the stories of individuals, such as Shaaw Tláa, also known as Kate Carmack, that have not always been told.

“To all those who are celebrating with friends and family, or participating in Dawson City’s Discovery Days, please ensure you do so safely and responsibly.
