Statement from Premier Pillai on the Hajj

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“Today is the start of the Hajj, the annual Islamic pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca.

“It is with great reverence and respect that our government marks this occasion. The Hajj is a religious duty for all Muslims who can undertake this pilgrimage recreating Muhammad’s path as he returned to his home as the leader of a new religion. The rituals performed during the Hajj symbolize values of sacrifice, empathy, compassion, and unity, all of which are values that resonate with Yukoners of all cultural and religious backgrounds.

“Whitehorse is home to a small but vibrant Muslim community represented by the Yukon Muslim Society. The territory’s first mosque opened in 2018 and represents the culturally diverse society we are building in the Yukon.

“I wish all who observe this date a peaceful, reflective time.”
