Statement from Premier Pillai on intergovernmental relations

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“As we envision our future, it is crucial that we reflect on our relationships with municipalities, other governments, Yukon First Nations and beyond.

“First and foremost, I would like to emphasize the ongoing government-to-government relationship and collaboration with Yukon First Nations. Throughout the past year my colleagues and since the end of the fall 2023 session of the Yukon Legislative Assembly ended, I have continued to travel to communities to meet with Yukon First Nations governments. These visits provide an opportunity to discuss shared priorities on issues crucial to their citizens and communities. 

“In December, members of our government were in Ottawa to participate in the Intergovernmental Forum. It was an opportunity to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Yukon First Nation leaders delivering Together Today for our Children Tomorrow to the Prime Minister in 1973.

“At that time, we also held a Yukon Forum, which remains a collaborative space focused on enhancing the quality of life for all Yukoners. The first Yukon Forum meeting of 2024 was held in Whitehorse last month, where important issues like salmon protection and wildlife conservation were discussed.

“Our government’s commitment to building relationships extends beyond the Yukon's borders.

"I had the privilege of meeting with federal Ministers during Yukon Days in December, discussing our priorities in areas like clean energy, affordable housing and infrastructure.

“Our government announced the establishment of our Yukon Arctic Advisory Council in January, furthering our efforts to enhance national understanding and visibility of the Yukon's role in Arctic security.

“We welcomed Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy to the Yukon for a visit in February. Our discussions covered various cross-border issues, including transportation and energy, as well as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit people.

“To conclude the visit, we signed an Intergovernmental Relations Accord and a Memorandum of Understanding on Alaska Highway Improvements to guide further collaboration.

“Several Ministers and I also attended the Association for Mineral Exploration's Roundup conference, using it as an opportunity to connect with industry and reiterate the role of Yukon First Nations in responsible, sustainable resource development. 

“I just returned from the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada annual conference where, alongside a delegation of government officials, I met with global investors, mining industry leaders, technical experts and federal Ministers to promote the Yukon as a world-class destination for minerals investments.

“This government recognizes that our strength lies in the relationships we cultivate, enabling us to make significant strides together. By fostering stronger ties, we aim to pave the way for a brighter future, where all Yukoners can thrive in a resilient, inclusive territory.”
