Statement from Premier Pillai on International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers

The following statement was issued by Premier Ranj Pillai:

“On May 29, we join the international community in paying tribute to those who served and continue to serve as United Nations (UN) peacekeepers.

“The first UN peacekeeping operation was launched in 1948 to maintain the ceasefire during the Arab-Israeli War, creating a model for future peacekeeping missions. Since then, UN peacekeeping missions have become a key component of global efforts to maintain international peace and security.

“The UN has now deployed over 70 peacekeeping missions to conflict zones around the world, involving tens of thousands of military, police and civilian personnel. UN peacekeepers have played a critical role in protecting civilians, facilitating political processes, promoting human rights and supporting humanitarian operations in extremely challenging scenarios.

“Canada has a proud history of contributing to UN peacekeeping missions around the world, starting in 1956 with the Suez Crisis in Egypt. Over 125,000 Canadian Armed Forces members, police officers and civilians have served in international peacekeeping missions in the past 75 years. Approximately 130 Canadians have died in UN peace operations.

“Canadians serving in UN peacekeeping missions come from all walks of life and all regions of our country. We hold a deep appreciation for the Yukoners who served as UN peacekeepers during their military careers. We must ensure that we never forget their service, sacrifice, and dedication.

“I would like to thank all UN peacekeepers for their efforts to maintain peace worldwide.”
