Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
“Building on an initial conversation held in August, I had the opportunity to meet with US Consul General Jim DeHart last week in Whitehorse to discuss the Yukon's ties with the United States and avenues for enhanced cooperation between our governments in economic development and Arctic security.
“In particular, we focused on transportation infrastructure and the Yukon's strategic significance in the development of critical minerals for the North American market. These issues are tied to Arctic security, and we acknowledged our shared responsibility in safeguarding regional interests.
“As international interest in the Arctic region grows, our government remains committed to ensuring that the Yukon’s unique perspectives, needs, aspirations and opportunities are recognized both within Canada and on the global stage. I appreciate the Consul General’s perspectives on this, given his recent experience as the US Coordinator for the Arctic Region.
“Looking ahead, we will continue to strengthen our relations and cooperation with the United States government, working collaboratively to advance common goals that promote the prosperity, stability and wellbeing of the territory.”
