Statement from Premier Pillai on new accessible duplexes open in Mayo and Carmacks

While events in Mayo were postponed due to fire threats in the region, Premier Ranj Pillai Minister responsible for the Yukon Housing Corporation, issued the following statement marking the opening of new accessible duplexes in Mayo and Carmacks.

“The mission of the Government of Yukon and the Yukon Housing Corporation is to make it so that in our territory, everyone has a place to call home.

“A home is more than just bricks and mortar; it is a sanctuary that shapes our lives and nurtures our dreams. Building strong communities begins with one home at a time.

“These new homes in Mayo and Carmacks are a testament to the commitment of our government to foster strong communities and enhance community housing rental stock across the Yukon. These duplexes in both communities are entirely wheelchair accessible, energy-efficient, and will provide families, couples and individuals with sustainable housing options for years to come.

“These duplexes were funded by Yukon Housing Corporation with support from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Both facilities represent a total investment of more than $2.35 million. This is money well spent to create accessible spaces that will soon support lives filled with the joy of family, the laughter of friends and the beauty of nature.

“It was an honour to be to join Carmacks Mayor Lee Bodie and Mayo-Tatchun MLA Jeremy Harper in Carmacks to celebrate the opening of the Carmacks Duplex on Prospector Road. After seeing the work that the Yukon Housing Corporation has done to bring these buildings to life, I am eager to see how future residents will make these places their own, turning these houses into homes.

“Unfortunately, we had to postpone events marking the opening of the duplex in Mayo due to fire threats in the area. I look forward to being able to  join Mayo-Tatchun MLA Jeremy Harper, Chief of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun First Nation Chief Dawna Hope, Mayo Mayor Trevor Ellis and everyone in the community to celebrate the opening of the Mayo duplex in person, as soon as the community is ready.”

Quick facts
  • The Mayo duplex units are 991 square feet each and an investment of $1.145 million.

  • The Carmacks duplex units are 1,113.12 square feet each and an investment of $1.2 million.

  • Landscaping will take place in the next two years.

  • Each of the accessible units has:

    • a large roll-in shower;
    • a separate bathtub;
    • a one pull-down shelf in the cabinet;
    • wheelchair accessible sink and;
    • raised washer and dryer.
  • Each duplex is replacing a double modular home that was no longer economically feasible to repair.

  • Yukon Housing Corporation owns and operates these homes as part of their community housing approach.

  • Each duplex has accessible two-bedroom units on both sides, are energy-efficient and are built 50 per cent better than the National Energy Code of Canada. The design has been carefully considered to respond to the needs of families, couples and individuals alike.

  • The four new homes are ready for Yukon Housing Corporation clients to move into.

  • The Yukon Housing Corporation has approximately 890 community housing units in 14 Yukon communities that are allocated to tenants through the Rent-Geared-to Income program, to social assistance clients or for the employee housing program if there is a need.
