Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Vuntut Gwitchin Elder Robert Bruce Jr. He was a respected leader and a beloved member of his community who played many important roles during his life.
“Robert Bruce Jr. dedicated his adult life to preserving and promoting the culture, language and traditions of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation.
“He served as a Chief from 1992 to 1996 and as an MLA from 1996 to 2000, including serving as Speaker of the Yukon Legislative Assembly. During his time as Chief 30 years ago, he signed the Vuntut Gwitchin Final and Self-Government Agreements, which paved the way for greater autonomy and prosperity for his people.
“Robert Bruce Jr. was a source of wisdom, guidance and inspiration for all who knew him. He will be remembered for his resiliency, generosity and commitment to his community.
“He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and community. On behalf of the Government of Yukon, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation and all those who mourn his loss.”
