Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
“On behalf of the Government of Yukon, it is my distinct honour to extend heartfelt congratulations to the Filipino community in the Yukon and all Filipino people across Canada and around the world on the occasion of Philippines Independence Day.
“June 12 marks the commemoration of the Philippines' hard-won independence from colonial powers and its emergence as a sovereign nation. It is a day of immense pride and celebration and a testament to the resilience, courage and unwavering spirit of Filipino people.
“As Canada marks the 75th year of bilateral relations with the Philippines in 2024, we celebrate the ties that bind our two nations: trade, a commitment to international peace and security and the rich cultural exchanges built by the large Filipino diaspora in Canada.
“The Philippines’ struggle for independence, characterized by bravery and sacrifice, serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of unity and the pursuit of freedom. The values that underpin Philippine independence – freedom, democracy and the relentless pursuit of a better future – are values that resonate deeply with us here in the Yukon.
“Our territory is home to a thriving Filipino community that has made significant contributions to the cultural, social and economic fabric of the Yukon. Your dedication to family, community and hard work enriches our society and strengthens the bonds that connect us. On this day, we not only celebrate your national heritage but also recognize the vital role that Filipino Yukoners play in making our territory a better place for all.
“I extend my warmest wishes for a joyous and meaningful Independence Day. I encourage all Yukoners to explore the contributions of community organizations, such as the Canadian Filipino Association of the Yukon and the Filipino Canadian Basketball League Yukon, and to discover plans for commemorating special occasions like this.
“May this day be filled with pride, joy and the shared hope for a prosperous and peaceful future.
“Mabuhay ang Pilipinas! Mabuhay ang Filipino!”
