Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
“This weekend marks Purim, a Jewish holiday which commemorates the survival of the Jewish people who were marked for death by their Persian rulers in the 5th century BCE, as recounted in the Book of Esther.
The story of Purim is one of ritual, performance and feminism, celebrated with masquerading, feasts, charity and the retelling of the Purim story.
“The Yukon has a small and vibrant Jewish population, represented by the Jewish Cultural Society of Yukon. We are blessed in the Yukon to have such a diverse, multicultural community.
“To all those celebrating Purim, I hope this occasion brings you laughter, unity and blessings. Let us embrace the spirit of triumph over adversity, remembering the courage and resilience of the Jewish people throughout history.
“Chag Purim Sameach!”
