Premier Pillai has released the following statement:
“On April 9 we recognize Vimy Ridge Day. This is a day to remember and reflect on the
astounding effort and sacrifices made by the Canadian Corps in the Battle of Vimy Ridge,
which occurred from April 9 to 12, 1917, during the First World War.
“The Battle of Vimy Ridge was the first time all four Canadian divisions fought together as a corps. Canada’s eventual victory is considered a defining moment for the country – a time for Canada to step out of Britain’s shadow. However, despite the stunning success, there were nearly 3,600 killed and more than 7,000 wounded.
“Several Yukoners fought in the Battle of Vimy Ridge, including Lieutenant Howard Grestock and Private William Hayhurst. As well, the Yukon Motor Machine Gun Battery – which laid down supporting fire – was originally financed by the legendary Joe Boyle, a wealthy Yukon inventor and miner, and was crewed by volunteers from Dawson.
“Flags on the Government of Yukon Main Administration Building will be flown at half-mast on April 9 to mark the national day of remembrance for the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
“I hope Yukoners will join me today in commemorating the Battle of Vimy Ridge and the brave actions of those who fought, and also in remembering the important role that Yukoners played during this pivotal battle.
“We will honour and remember them.”
