Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
“Today, as we observe World Refugee Day, we reflect upon the global refugee crisis and reaffirm our commitment to compassion.
“This day serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by millions of individuals around the world who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, persecution and unimaginable hardships. Each person forced to leave their homeland carries with them a unique story. Refugees who come to the Yukon bring talents, skills and dreams that enrich our territory.
“Organizations like Yukon Cares, the Ukrainian Canadian Association of Yukon, and the Multicultural Centre of the Yukon provide support and services to refugees resettling in Yukon. They are supported by tireless volunteers who donate time and money to help resettle refugees in our territory. As we mark World Refugee Day, we thank them for their service to our community and to communities around the world who view Canada and the Yukon as places where people are free to live, grow and thrive in peace.
“I also want acknowledge the work of Government of Yukon employees operating the Ukrainian family support desk and the Türkiye and Syria support desk, offering resources to support people affected by war and natural disasters in those jurisdictions as they immigrate to the Yukon.
“I urge all Yukoners to extend a hand of friendship and support to those who have sought refuge within our borders. Let us come together as a community to embrace our new neighbours, listen to their stories, and provide them with the tools and opportunities they need to rebuild their lives.
“As we mark World Refugee Day, let us remember that by embracing diversity and providing sanctuary to those in need, we not only uplift the lives of refugees but also strengthen the fabric of our own society.”
