Statement from Premier Pillai on the Yukon’s 126th anniversary

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“Today we mark the 126th anniversary of the Yukon becoming a territory of Canada.

“It was June 13, 1898, that the land on which we are fortunate to live separated from the Northwest Territories and joined Confederation as the Yukon Territory. While this was a significant step in our journey as a maturing jurisdiction, it is crucial to recognize and honour the enduring presence of Yukon First Nations who have inhabited this land since time immemorial.

“The Government of Yukon is deeply committed to strong working relationships with First Nations. We are listening to and working with Indigenous governments and groups to address the harms that have been caused by a long history of inequality and discrimination.

“We must ensure that the next 125 years and beyond tells a very different story for everyone who lives here.

“Together, let’s all play a part in creating an inclusive society and a safe, thriving Yukon for future generations.”
