Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“On behalf of the Government of Yukon, I congratulate Maria Benoit on her re-election as Ḵaa Sháade Héni for the Carcross/Tagish First Nation.

“The Government of Yukon values our government-to-government relationship with the Carcross/Tagish First Nation and I look forward to our continued collaboration as we advance our shared priorities.

“I commend Ḵaa Sháade Héni Benoit for her life-long commitment and dedication to serve her community. Over the years she has focused on promoting community health and healing, fostering economic sustainability, and preserving and protecting language and culture as well as Indigenous rights.

“During her first term, Ḵaa Sháade Héni Benoit oversaw key milestones such as signing the final management plan for the Tagish River Habitat Protection Area with the Government of Canada and the Government of Yukon; signing the management plan for the Tséi Zhéłe/Sinwaa Éex’i Yé/Conrad Historic Site; and signing an agreement supporting the wildlife fire training of Carcross/Tagish First Nation Citizens on an initial-attack crew and expanding wildfire resiliency in the Carcross area.

“Other critical points under her leadership, include the Carcross’ Ghùch Tlâ Community School joining the First Nations School Board and the ground searches at the Chooutla former residential school site.

“Congratulations Ḵaa Sháade Héni Benoit once again. As we look to the future, our government is committed to continuing to work together to further strengthen our partnership and collaborate on issues that matter to Carcross/Tagish First Nation Citizens and all Yukoners.”
