Statement from Premier Ranj Pillai on recent meetings with Selkirk First Nation and Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“Earlier this week, alongside MLA for Mayo-Tatchun Jeremy Harper, I had the pleasure of connecting with the leadership of Selkirk First Nation and the leadership of Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation in their respective communities.

During these meetings, Yukon First Nation Chiefs, Council members and I discussed areas of concern, common interests and opportunities for continued collaboration on shared priorities between our governments.

“On Monday morning, Selkirk First Nation Chief Sharon Nelson and Council hosted a meeting in Pelly Crossing where we discussed the important issues of housing matters, mining and community wellness.

“In Carmacks on Monday afternoon, Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation Chief Nicole Tom, Council members and I discussed how to support the recovery of the Chinook salmon stock as well as subdivision development and the second phase of the Carmacks Bypass.

“I extend my gratitude to these Yukon First Nation leaders for the opportunity to strengthen our government-to-government relationship and to collaborate on ways we can address the needs and interests of their communities.

“Our government remains committed to learning from Yukon First Nations and communities about their priorities and interests and how we can best work together on these matters. Working together with Yukon First Nation governments is essential to delivering benefits to Yukon First Nation Citizens and communities, ultimately to all Yukoners.

“I want to thank Yukon First Nations leaders for the open and honest dialogue and the opportunity to strengthen our government-to-government relationships based on partnership and respect.”
