Statement from the Yukon Minister of Education and Minister responsible for the Women and Gender Equity Directorate on the importance of the SOGI Policy

This statement has been edited to correct the name of the SOGI Policy, add the ARC Foundation as a partner and correct the fact that the SOGI Policy is not part of the Department of Education curriculum. The SOGI Policy is a Department of Education policy that promotes inclusion and diversity.

Minister of Education and Minister responsible for the Women and Gender Equity Directorate has issued the following statement:

"As we celebrate Pride Month across the Yukon, it is essential to reflect on the progress we have made in promoting diversity, equity and inclusion within our educational system. The Department of Education's updated Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity policy – SOGI – is a cornerstone of our commitment to creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for all students, staff and school community members of all sexual orientations and gender identities.

"Our SOGI Policy represents our collective dedication to fostering a culture of respect and acceptance in our schools and our broader society. It helps ensure that every student feels valued and supported to express their true selves without fear of discrimination or harassment. This policy is crucial in helping us combat bullying, reduce mental health issues and improve the overall wellbeing of our students.

"During Pride Month, we celebrate the diversity that makes the Yukon vibrant and strong. It is a time to acknowledge the contributions of 2SLGBTQIA+ people and to reaffirm our commitment to their rights and dignity. The SOGI Policy plays a vital role in this celebration by helping ensure that our schools are places where all students can thrive, learn and grow. Incidents at schools that are contrary to Yukon values, such as the vandalism of a Pride flag, only emphasize the importance of our ongoing work to ensure the safety and inclusivity of all students.

"Education is the key to changing hearts and minds. This education extends beyond the classroom, influencing how young people interact with the world around them and fostering a more inclusive society for future generations.

"As the Minister of Education and Minister responsible for the Women and Gender Equity Directorate, I am proud of the steps we have taken to implement and uphold the LGBTQ2S+ Inclusion Action Plan, support Queer Yukon and partner with ARC Foundation to bring SOGI 1 2 3 resources and supports to educators across the territory. I am grateful to the educators, administrators, students, families and community members who have supported and championed this initiative. Together, we are building a brighter, more inclusive future for all Yukoners.

"This Pride Month, let us celebrate the achievements, acknowledge the work still to be done and continue to stand together in support of our 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Let us reaffirm our commitment to the values of diversity, inclusion and respect that the SOGI Policy embodies. By doing so, we ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed and flourish in a safe and supportive environment.

"Thank you, and happy Pride Month."
