Yukon Housing Corporation hosts tri-territorial housing meeting

This is a joint news release between the Government of Yukon, the Government of the Northwest Territories and the Government of Nunavut.

Yukon Housing Corporation hosted senior government officials from Housing Northwest Territories and the Nunavut Housing Corporation at a tri-territorial housing meeting to discuss housing priorities across the North.

The three territories face similar challenges related to northern living. The meeting provided officials with an opportunity to share experiences and begin developing a tri-territorial pathway for future collaboration and coordination.

During this meeting, the territories presented an overview of initiatives underway and completed for each territory including capital build updates, home design, partnerships, housing needs assessments and funding agreements. The meeting concluded with a tour of several projects underway or completed including 401 Jeckell Street, which welcomed families in January 2023, and is Yukon Housing Corporation’s most recently completed multi-family, affordable housing construction project.

New partnerships are critical to advancing a robust housing sector. Meeting with government counterparts from other jurisdictions supports Creating Home, the Yukon Housing Corporation’s strategic plan, by working together to coordinate efforts and improving the provider experience while building a sustainable future where Yukoners can thrive.

Working together with our colleagues at Housing Northwest Territories and Nunavut Housing Corporation will help advance our shared housing goals across the North. This partnership will strengthen our ability to negotiate federal funding and terms and tackle the housing challenges faced by northerners through collaborative initiatives. For Yukoners, this means more effective solutions and support for their housing needs

Premier and Minister responsible for Yukon Housing Corporation Ranj Pillai

Housing Northwest Territories is pleased to collaborate with the Yukon and Nunavut as we work together to improve housing outcomes across the North. When staff work together and share best practices, it allows us to support Northern residents in the best, most effective way we can. Through partnership, we can implement housing solutions that meet the unique needs of Northerners.

Minister responsible for Housing Northwest Territories Lucy Kuptana

This tri-territorial meeting provided an invaluable platform for sharing knowledge and exploring collaborative solutions to our shared housing challenges. The insights gained will directly support the Nunavut 3000 strategy. By learning from our northern partners, we can ensure we are on track to achieve our ambitious goal to build 3,000 new homes in communities across Nunavut by 2030.
