Yukon public library users have more reason to celebrate as Libraries Month approaches: Yukon libraries will no longer be charging late fees.
Yukon Public Libraries are joining libraries across North America in removing barriers by eliminating overdue fines and outstanding balances for late returns so users feel comfortable accessing library resources and services.
Removing overdue fines also allows library staff more time to provide valuable services and is more cost-effective as administration costs to collect overdue fines are greater than the value of the fines themselves.
Yukon Public Libraries recognizes the strong relationship patrons have with libraries. It is important patrons still return materials on time so libraries have materials for everyone to enjoy.
As part of maintaining a vibrant and relevant collection that all Yukoners can access, there will be a charge after 28 days to replace lost or damaged materials. This charge will be refunded if the item is returned in good condition.
Libraries play a pivotal role in Yukon communities. Everyone should feel welcome in their public library, and by eliminating late fees our government is reducing the barriers for accessing vital resources and library services.

Yukon Public Libraries used more financial resources to invoice late fees than the amount it collects overall. Fees accrued to a maximum of one dollar per item.

The removal of late fees applies to all 15 Yukon Public Libraries in the territory.
