Update: this alert was updated on May 21, 2024 to remove zones 2 and 3 from the area under evacuation alert.
May 17, 2024 – 3:15 PM
An Evacuation Alert has been issued by Yukon Emergency Measures Organization and Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation for Old Crow evacuation zones 1, 2 and 3 (see map). Other areas may be affected as this incident unfolds.
This alert is due to the risk of flooding along the Porcupine River during seasonal breakup. Evacuations will begin if water rises quickly and overtops Dump Road. At that time, Flood Monitors will start door-to-door notifications in Zone 1 and continue through Zone 2 and Zone 3. If you are in these zones, you should be ready to leave at a moment’s notice.
People should make sure they know which evacuation zone their home is in. Local officials will support residents and visitors to evacuate before flooding occurs, and during flooding if needed.
When preparing to evacuate, you should:
- pack an emergency kit and make an evacuation plan;
- go to the administration office to tell them about your evacuation plan. You can ask for extra help for people in your house when you do this; and
- stay clear of the Porcupine and Crow rivers, including riverbanks, when ice is breaking up or when water is running fast and high.
If there is flooding, beware of road washouts. Tell your friends or family where you are, especially if you’re on the land, and your contact information, including your satellite phone, inReach or ZOLEO. Make a plan for your pets. Animals are not allowed inside the reception centre at Chief Zzeh Gittlit School.
If there is an evacuation, register at the reception centre at Chief Zzeh Gittlit School, even if you are not staying there.
Information will be available at the community centre, the school, on the Vuntut Gwitchin Government Facebook page, the Yukon Protective Services Facebook page, 105.5 FM and at www.Yukon.ca/emergencies.
