Yukon schools and community organizations receive $350,000 for student attendance projects

This is a joint news release between the Government of Yukon and the Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society’s Every Student, Every Day funding program.

A total of $350,000 in support has been awarded to 36 projects across the Yukon through the Every Student, Every Day fund, with support from the Government of Yukon.

New Chair appointed for the Yukon Housing Corporation Board of Directors

The Government of Yukon has appointed Doris Bill as the new Chair of the Yukon Housing Corporation (YHC) Board of Directors. The three-year term appointment was made on May 15, 2023.

Ms. Bill, former Chief of Kwanlin Dün First Nation, was born in Whitehorse and has multi-generational family roots throughout the territory. She has championed many social issues such as community safety and housing. Her diverse experience and unique insights into community housing issues will position her as a trusted and inspiring leader of the current YHC Board of Directors.

Government of Yukon invites public feedback on new Animal Protection and Control Act regulations

In keeping with its commitment to modernize regulations and legislation to meet the needs of Yukoners, the Government of Yukon is seeking public input to develop regulations under the new Animal Protection and Control Act.

The Animal Protection and Control Act will align the Yukon with other jurisdictions across the country and increase safety for Yukoners and animals. Regulations will provide the details required to implement and enforce this new legislation.

Statement from Premier Pillai on northern diplomatic tour

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“Today I had the privilege of meeting with 25 ambassadors and high commissioners to Canada on the first day of Global Affairs Canada’s northern diplomatic tour. It was an honour to welcome the delegation alongside numerous First Nations and municipal leaders from across the Yukon.

“Among the many countries represented, there were delegates from Austria, Denmark, Indonesia, Kenya, New Zealand and Japan.

Additional funding bolsters Yukon First Nations-led wildfire risk reduction

The Government of Yukon and the Government of Canada are partnering to enhance community wildfire prevention across the territory.

This includes a new $700,000 investment from the Government of Canada towards Yukon First Nations-led FireSmart projects delivered through Indigenous Services Canada’s Emergency Management Assistance Program.

Four new inductees recognized by the Yukon Transportation Hall of Fame

The Yukon Transportation Hall of Fame has inducted four new recipients. Awards were presented during a ceremony held on the evening of  June 6 and included: Person of the Year (2022), Pioneer of the Year (2022 and 2023) and the Order of Polaris (2023).

Yukon Advisory Committee on MMIWG2S+ releases Implementation Plan for Yukon’s MMIWG2S+ Strategy

Today, the Yukon Advisory Committee on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit+ People (MMIWG2S+)  released the Implementation Plan for Changing the Story to Upholding Dignity and Justice: Yukon’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit+ People Strategy. The Implementation Plan marks an important point in the Committee’s efforts to develop a whole-of-Yukon approach to ending the systemic issues that lead to violence against Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit+ people.
