Site description
  • The Tlingit Chilkat, Southern and Northern Tutchone and Copper River peoples have gathered here to trade for thousands of years.
  • The Southern Tutchone name Chetthel Chi means “stone axe handle lake” referring to the copper found nearby.
  • Good place to see migrating birds in the fall. Look for moose, beaver, muskrat and otter.
  • You can explore Pickhandle Lakes Habitat Protection Area by boat on the Koidern River.
  • Day-use area: closed 11 pm to 7 am.
