Apply no later than 14 school days after your classes start to receive funding for your entire study period.
We will consider late applications. If approved, funding will start from the date we receive your signed application.
The Student Training Allowance is intended to support Yukon residents attending an approved training program at a Yukon institution.
We calculate your funding amount based on the number of weeks of your program.
You can receive:
- a maximum of 40 weeks per academic year; and
- a maximum of 170 weeks over your lifetime.
An academic year begins on August 1 of the current calendar year and ends on July 31 of the following calendar year.
You cannot receive the Student Training Allowance and the Yukon Grant at the same time. In your lifetime, you can receive a combined total of 170 weeks of funding from the Student Training Allowance and the Yukon Grant.
For example, if you attend Yukon University and use 68 weeks of the Student Training Allowance, you’ll have 102 weeks of funding to continue your post-secondary studies with either the:
- Student Training Allowance; or
- the Yukon Grant.
The Student Training Allowance is a grant. You do not have to pay it back. The only reasons you might have to repay the grant is if you:
- receive an overpayment;
- withdraw from your program; or
- drop to part-time status.
You're eligible for the Student Training Allowance if you are:
- registered at:
- Yukon University; or
- Alkan Air;
- enrolled in full-time studies;
- taking a program that is at least 3 weeks long; and
- a Yukon resident who:
- is legally able to study in Canada;
- has lived in the Yukon for at least 2 years in a row before the start of classes;
- has not lived outside the Yukon, except to attend full-time studies, within those 2 years; and
- is not eligible to apply for funding in any other province or territory.

When considering how to pay for the various costs related to attending post-secondary studies, you may want to know what other funding can be combined with the Student Training Allowance.
The Yukon Grant and the Student Training Allowance
You cannot receive the Student Training Allowance and the Yukon Grant at the same time. You must choose the funding that suits your needs and circumstances best.
You may want to choose the Student Training Allowance if you are attending:
- Yukon University; or
- Alkan Air.
If you have one or more dependants, and you’ll be attending either Yukon University or Alkan Air, the Student Training Allowance may be more suitable.
Other funding and the Student Training Allowance
You can get funding from another source and still qualify for the Student Training Allowance if the other funding is for:
