Statement from Minister Streicker on World Tourism Day

Minister of Tourism and Culture John Streicker has issued the following statement:

“Every year on September 27, we celebrate World Tourism Day, recognizing the importance and impact the tourism sector has globally and here at home.

“World Tourism Day is an opportunity to reflect on the significance and positive contributions our tourism sector makes to the Yukon. While it contributes to more than five per cent of the Yukon’s GDP, it is so much more than an economic generator. It allows us to showcase our unique history, cultures and heritage and share what makes the Yukon and our communities so special. Tourism can also contribute meaningfully to reconciliation as outlined by the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action.

“This year’s theme from The United Nations World Tourism Organization is Tourism and Peace. It highlights how travel and experiencing other places and cultures can foster understanding and respect.

“We hope this day is a reminder of how fortunate we are to call our beautiful territory home, and how special it is to share it with travellers from around the world.

“On World Tourism Day let’s celebrate the people, experiences, and communities that make the Yukon so vibrant. Let’s also continue to support tourism-related initiatives and activities that aim to build a more inclusive, sustainable and resilient life for Yukoners and our visitors.”
