Statement from Minister Mostyn on Library Month in the Yukon

Minister of Community Services Richard Mostyn has issued the following statement:

“October is National Library Month, and I’m thrilled to invite Yukoners to join us in celebrating the incredible impact libraries have on our communities. Across the country, and here in the Yukon, libraries are more than just places to borrow books. They are hubs of cultural enrichment, learning and community engagement.

“Yukon Public Libraries is joining libraries across the country in celebrating and raising awareness of the valuable role libraries play.

“This month our libraries will run their Did You Know campaign to inform Yukoners about the valuable services at the library. Whether it’s promoting cultural awareness, supporting freedom of expression or offering educational programs, libraries are central to our communities.

“An example of the diverse services offered includes the Whitehorse Public Library regularly hosting an Outreach Clinic with Service Canada, the Canada Revenue Agency and their resident Library Outreach Worker. A Library Outreach Worker at Whitehorse Public Library offers support with listening, mental wellness, accessing social services and connecting patrons to community programs.

“I encourage Yukoners to take part in the fun and enriching events happening at the Whitehorse Public Library throughout October. Our youngest Yukoners can join Story Time Tuesdays, teens can dive into adventure with the Pathfinder role playing game drop-ins on Thursdays, there is a Santa School to get into the festive spirit and library tours to discover everything they have to offer.

“The highlight of the Library Month will be an Author Talk with Nadine Sander-Green, author of Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit. Sander-Green will be speaking at the Whitehorse Public Library on October 30 and October 31 at Yukon University. This is a fantastic opportunity to hear from a talented local author and learn more about her work.

“I also encourage everyone to visit the Energy, Mines, and Resources Library in the Elijah Smith Building on October 22 from 12 to 3 pm for an Open House. It’s a great chance to explore the Yukon’s largest natural resources library, and refreshments will be available. “All 15 of our Yukon public libraries offer an invaluable service to the communities they serve. I want to thank the dedicated staff and patrons across the territory for making our libraries such vibrant and welcoming spaces.
