Yukon Baby Basket Project

The Yukon Baby Basket Project helps families across the Yukon.

This project supports new parents with baby supplies, essential items, educational resources, and safe sleep guidance to help them through early parenthood.

What is the basket and what’s inside?

The baby basket is a box made of heavy cardboard with a mattress insert. The box also:

  • has approximately 20 essential new baby and parent supplies along with educational resources for new parents;
  • functions as a portable and safe sleep space for baby;  
  • meets Health Canada’s safety standards for cribs, cradles and bassinets; and
  • follows best practices in Canada.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for a free baby basket, you must:

  • Be a Yukon resident with a referral from a healthcare provider;
  • be about 28 weeks pregnant or more; or
  • have a baby under 2 months old.

Why offer the Yukon Baby Basket Project?

The project aims to support the following health and wellness outcomes for Yukoners including:

  • providing parents and caregivers with better sleep safety knowledge
  • providing parents of newborn babies with a safe sleep option;
  • supporting parents and caregivers by providing educational resources and related information; and
  • providing parents and caregivers no cost access to essential baby supplies.

Where can you get a baby basket if you are eligible?

After receiving a referral the program area will contact eligible participants to arrange the pick-up of a baby basket.

When can you apply?

Apply for a free baby basket starting August 30, 2024.

How do you apply?

  1. If you meet the eligibility criteria listed above tell your health care provider that you want  a baby basket. They have the form, but you can bring a printed form to your appointment.
  2. Your health care provider will send the completed form on your behalf to the Yukon Baby Basket Project.
  3. The project will contact you later to arrange basket pick-up.
  4. You must sign a release waiver prior to receiving the basket.

Health care providers include:

  • family physicians and their staff;
  • public health nurses; and
  • registered midwives.
